Cityscapes - Pervez Photography

Cities are such a unique place to shoot. As centers of mass populations, they are an embodiment of the human experiment: they show us how we live together, how we form a society, but uniquely so. This is because cities inevitably include diverse groups of people, spanning race, class, ethnicity, gender, religion, etc. It is hard to not find a particular group of people in these metropolises. And in this sea of humanity, there are also majestic buildings, parks, and unique architecture. In all of this, people function with normalcy. In that sense, cities remind me that we are capable of living with one another, despite our differences, and that there is nothing unusual about it. City photography has the potential to capture all of this, and that is simply magical.

The 7 Train

There's a long story to this one. I wanted to shoot the 7 train by the Silvercup Studios sign from the Queensboro Plaza subway stop while I was in New York City for some consulting work. The subway ride should have taken 12 minutes from my office, tops. I hopped on a train after the work day was finished. We were almost at the stop when the train stopped. We stayed underground for an hour - someone had pulled the emergency brake on the train in front of us. In the end, we went backwards to the previous station, where we all got off (as no trains were going to Queensboro until the situation was fully resolved). Annoyed, I decided to head home. About 4 stops later, I realized it was getting close to sunset, so I decided to change route. I hopped on a 7 train (in which I had no space to move), and within 20 uncomfortable minutes slammed against the door of the train, I got to the station. Once there, I saw a pretty fantastic view, and decided to play with the sunlight by moving so it would ricochet off a sign. After that, I just had to wait for another 7 train to come on through. So, what should have been an easy 20 minute process ended up taking about 2 hours, though the resulting photo is much better given the sunlight at that time.
